Re: Delivering a knife
This will be a special one for me with the start of knife number 1000. A Braai or Barbeque butcher knife with a full flat grind to make easy work of cutting and slicing in the preparation of your meat for the cooking fire.
A 9 inch "X" pattern stainless damascus blade that will have bronze bolsters, bronze and G10 spacers and a Chittim burl handle on a partial tang handle. Will be engraved with appropriate markings to commemorate the milestone.

Re: Delivering a knife
That is stainless damascus and has two different grades of stainless the same way that this video shows using two different grades of carbon steel. There is a lot of time involved in making the damascus so I buy in the damascus bar at the stage Kyle send his off to a knifemaker to make the knife. The stainless damascus is commercially made and machine rolled which makes it a less expensive that the hand done as Kyle shows here but the next step down from that is all hand hammered and is very time expensive. I had a guy in my shed for a few days who used my power hammer to make a carbon steel damascus billet and he was 3 days from start to making the knife so labour is up there. I get the commercially made stainless damascus bars for approx $150 depending on size so it makes a more economical use of my time and I can offer knives at a better price than if I was to do the damascus myself and with my shoulders that is not something I am really able to do anymore.
Kyle in the video is a master bladesmith and does some amazing work.

Re: Delivering a knife
This has been a one off coming from a picture drawn full size and emailed to me. I had the drawing printed so the print had the same dimension as shown on the email with the blade length being the main dimension to be used to correct the sizing of the print.
The customer had seen a movie and wanted a knife similar to what the character had used in the film which I believe was "The last of the dogmen".
He sent me the mammoth molar scales and these I fixed to G10 liners to keep them from fracturing through drilling and shaping which was done with temporary pins as was the brass bolster with all the shaping and finish polishing when they were removed for the blade to be stone washed. Final assembly meant careful clean-up of any squeezed out epoxy at clamp up then all that remained was to dress off the pins in the scales and peen the brass pin through the brass bolster. The knife is secured in the sheath via the strap and stud.

A new model professional chef with Cherry burl over brass on the 9 inch 1084 HC blade. A gift for a friend who has had a hard year recovering from a M/C accident where a sheep jumped out in front of him last christmas. Many operations later, he had what is hopefully the last operation a week back.
