new paint this winter

by VonGruff -

Have been talking to Dean      http://www.imaginationunlimited.co.nz/? ... cjF2LR87ck
and booked my tins in for paint in mid august when riding is  more  limited so the bike wont be down when needed.
At the moment it is the stock Harley blue but I want to change it to more of a darker cobalt blue with lighter grey blue accents. The tank top will have this as the base design but the upper pointed diamond shape will be changed to a triangle to reflect my knifemakes mark of three dots in a triangle. The lower diamond shape will be changed to a cross tio reflect my faith.

Image

The sides of the tank will have this as a base design but the name will be repalced by ghiost flames in the lighter blue grey with the intention to have them subtle rather than overt.

Image

I would really like the rear guard to be more like the fat biy front guard with the swelled end to be level with the axel. A little like a ladies skirt being knee length and hiding but promising 😉

Does anyome know of a rear guard to fit the 05 dyna that would give me this look at the lower rear without having to cut and weld a couple of guards or parts together. This is the BSA Spitfire I built over 30 years ago. The tins were all fiberglass but it took me a whole lot of hours to make them (and everythig else if it come to that)

Keen to see what it looks like once it's done! I'd imagine custom for the rear guard.

Yes that is what I am thinking so may leave it alone for the time being. Can always come back to it but at least will have a guard to mount while I work on that over the next summer.

Something like that looks like it'd work without too much hassle!

Now for am embarrasing admission and there is no face palm emogi so imagine me giving myself a good slapping and we can carry on.
When I was thinking through the paint plans I wasn't near the bike and somehow my mind changed gear back to when I spent so much time building the BSA, making the tank and getting the paint sorted for it and as it had a clear space on top of the tank the design noted above would have fitted perfectly but the FXD has the center panel and so does not have the uninterupted space to do that so going to stay with the side panel and name but without the big circle under the Harley name but enclose the name within the continuation of the flame circle. Image
Spent some time at the paint shop this morning and have got the colours sorted and while it is hard to photograph the colours to get the true shades the dark blue is almost blue black in some lights with the silver taking on blue tints when next to the dark blue.

Got the first draft from  pro signs for the decals with the change coming that will take the back out of the ovals where it meets the flames and morph the two together insted of it looking like the flames tacked on the back of the oval.  The leading edge of the flames for the front guard will be evened up so they meet the oval at the same place. Really like where this is going and have spent quite a bit of time at the signs place going over what I had wanted. Painter has the paint mixed and waiting so should get this all sorted this week and deliver the tins early next week.

Looks great @VonGruff. Excited to see the finished product.
PS - I think the update with the oval blending into the flames will look much better too :D

Got the tins off this afternoon and will get them to the painter tp start the prep work but will go by the bike shop as I am not sure how to disconect the internal tank wiring as I dont see any connectors there and having the new mini indicators at the rear I will get him to sort those as well. I got another update on the decals but there is still a little bit to change which surprised me as I see he has flipped the lower tank image rather than mirror imaging it so he will correct that and ease the flame lines as they get to the oval on both tank and guards so it flows a little better

Final draft so being printed today with the tins at the painters. It is down to waiting now but Dave will let me know when the top coat is done so I can have a look (before clears) as it may be that we run a mist coat of blue over the silver which is very clean and bright so may want to have it dulled back a bit.

Was in the city today and got a call to check out the top coats in progress. Still has a bit of titivating to do round some of the pin striping and clears to go so it looks a bit dead at the moment but the clears will give it life so am very pleased with it for now. Should be done by next week.

The tins are home and I couldn't be happier with how they have come out. They were outside on the stands when I got to Daves place ( https://opening-hours.nz/0646139/ABFX )  and in the sunlight the colour is stunning with a great deal of life with the pearl in it but out of the light it changes to a darker blue and is just what I had wanted with the name and ghost flames setting it off perfectly. Wont assemble it all yet as I am waiting on the raked steering head cups which should be here in about 10 days and wen they replace the standard ones and the 3 inch slugs added and all together I will do a walk round video to show the various bits that have been changed over the last few months to be all ready for the coming riding weather.

Looking good. Make sure you show us what it looks like in the sunlight too! Before or after fitting it all to the bike 😉
