Has anyone put 37 cams in an 88 with stock heads?
Has anyone put 37 cams in an 88 with stock heads?
A buddy of mine was asking the other night about the Andrews 37 cam in an 88 which currently has stage 1. He's after an aggressive idle and more mid to top end power rather than down low. A tune and adjustable pushrods will be done along with the cam, and the cam chest has already had a refresh (bearings etc). He's not wanting to do head work at this stage.
I know lots of people say head work, high compression, etc etc. but I've also heard of them working just fine with a stock head, along with being future proofed for a big bore kit later on.
Anyone have any experience or info on this?
Thanks

I know there are a lot of naysayers but Andrews themselves say the 37 is a great fit for an 88TC with stock heads.
From the horses mouth.
Give them an email or call if you want to chat with them - they'll let you know the best fit 😎

Thanks @bronx. He ended up giving Andrews an email and one of their reps responded with virtually exactly what you said.

I remember lots of these discussions on multiple US-based HD forums a while ago. Always a spark for heated debate 😂
I would say you would not have received the same recommendation there haha, that being not the correct one 😉

Saw this comparrison between the 21, 26 and 37
With the 21, 26, 37 cams:
The 21 and 26 pull from idle to the 4500 rpm range. The 37, 1500 to 5000.
The 21 has a .498 lift, (All 3 are bolt-in cams, requiring no spring or head work) making it a bolt in cam, with minimal valve train noise and an all around cam to enhance every day performance. The 26 is a .490 lift with slightly more duration and higher timing specs. This is why it's power band is similar.
The 37 is a .510 lift, with the same duration as the 26, but even more timing. I'd take the 37 over the 21 or the 26, if given a choice.

Let us know how it goes once your buddy has the cam sorted!
I'll be keen to hear how the 37 sounds in an 88.
